‘To Cage a God’ by Elizabeth May

Synopsis

To cage a god is divine. To be divine is to rule. To rule is to destroy.

Using ancient secrets, Galina and Sera’s mother grafted gods into their bones. Bound to brutal deities and granted forbidden power no commoner has held in a thousand years, the sisters have been raised as living weapons. Now, the time has come for them to overthrow an empire―no matter the cost.

With their mother gone and their country on the brink of war, it falls to the sisters to take the helm of the rebellion and end the cruel reign of a royal family possessed by destructive gods. Because when the ruling alurea invade, they conquer with fire and blood. And when they clash, common folk burn.

Forced into a desperate plan, Sera reunites with her estranged lover who now leads the rebellion, while Galina infiltrates the palace. In this world of deception and danger, her only refuge is an isolated princess whose whip-smart tongue and sharp gaze threaten to uncover Galina’s secret. Torn between desire and duty, Galina must make a choice: work together to expose the lies of the empire―or bring it all down.

My Review

My rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐/5

This book opens with a tense prologue: a girl witnesses an inferno, is hidden by her mother and survives.

Twenty years pass and we discover that this girl is called Galina and she has a sister called Sera. Their deceased mother, Irina, used ancient magic, and manage to install gods into their bones.

Both females don’t like what was done to them. Sera’s god within her hates her, and Galina tries to silence her god by drinking copious amounts of alcohol.

With the country at the brink of war, the sisters want to silence the cruel Empress Isadora. With Galina inside the palace gathering information, and Sera on the outside, both sisters will have to think on their feet and use their wit in order to survive…

I normally never read fantasy, however, I got really engrossed in the story and its characters. There are loads of strong female leads, which I really liked.

We have an element of romance, Sera with Vitaly and Galina with Vasilisa. We have a villain in the form of Empress Isadora.

Be prepared for deception, lots of threat, intertwined with flirting banter and romance.

Thank you to Daphne Press for my proof copy. I cannot wait for the second (and final) book in this duology.
